Honus Wagner T-206 Sells For $2.35 Million

Auto Date Wednesday, February 28th, 2007

A 1909 Honus Wanger T-206 card, the “Holy Grail” of the hobby, sold on Tuesday for a record $2.35 million.

It is one of about 50 known Honus Wagner cards and is said to be the one in the best condition.

The card was sold by Brian Siegel who acquired the card in mid-2000 from collector Michael Gidwitz for $1,265,000.  Since the purchase, he has kept the card in a vault at PSA (Professional Sports Authentication).  It has been shown around the country.

This card was owned in the past by hockey great Wayne Gretzky and former L.A. Kings owner Bruce McNall.  It was later owned by Wal-Mart which gave it away in a promotional drawing in the mid-1990′s.  The winner could not afford to pay the taxes on it and sold it at auction for $640,000.
