Topps Reveals 2007 Finest Baseball Rookie #1

Auto Date Wednesday, April 4th, 2007

This years Topps Finest baseball had redemption cards for the first 10 cards of the set.  The only difference with everyday run-of-the-mill redemptions in other sets is that collectors do not know what player the card will show.  Collectors can turn in redemptions until August 15, 2007.

Topps has revealed that card #1 of the redemptions is pitcher Hideki Okajima of the Boston Red Sox.  The other 9 cards will be announced by Topps throughout the major league baseball season.

The Rookie Card Debate

Auto Date Tuesday, March 20th, 2007

There are many different opinions as to what criteria should be used to determine what is a players rookie card.  Is it the first card ever issued for the player, the first card in a professional uniform or the first card by a major, licensed trading card company?

Take for example Mark McGwire, his 1985 Topps Olympic card is not considered a true rookie card and many of his cards issued in 1987 are.

A great discussion of this topic has been posted on the blog.

Derek Jeter, Mickey Mantle, George Bush?

Auto Date Wednesday, February 28th, 2007

Topps has made quite a stir with the release of 2007 Topps Baseball.

The Derek Jeter base card shows Yankee Great Mickey Mantle and current President George Bush in the background.

Topps Spokesman Clay Luraschi admits that it was done on purpose by the Topps creative department.

The card had been selling for a couple of dollars last week but after appearing in numerous print, online and television publications, the cards sold for upwards of $300 on eBay.   Like always happens with cards that get national attention, the fury is wearing off and the card is now selling below $50.

Honus Wagner T-206 Sells For $2.35 Million

Auto Date Wednesday, February 28th, 2007

A 1909 Honus Wanger T-206 card, the “Holy Grail” of the hobby, sold on Tuesday for a record $2.35 million.

It is one of about 50 known Honus Wagner cards and is said to be the one in the best condition.

The card was sold by Brian Siegel who acquired the card in mid-2000 from collector Michael Gidwitz for $1,265,000.  Since the purchase, he has kept the card in a vault at PSA (Professional Sports Authentication).  It has been shown around the country.

This card was owned in the past by hockey great Wayne Gretzky and former L.A. Kings owner Bruce McNall.  It was later owned by Wal-Mart which gave it away in a promotional drawing in the mid-1990’s.  The winner could not afford to pay the taxes on it and sold it at auction for $640,000.

MVP Signs Exclusive Deal with Topps… Bad for Collectors?

Auto Date Saturday, January 6th, 2007

2006 National League MVP has signed an exclusive marketing deal with Topps.  It will be begin with all 2007 baseball products.

It gives Topps exclusive rights for autographed baseball cards, game-used memorabilia cards and also the use of Howard’s image in advertising and on packaging.

Topps also has an exclusive with New York Mets’ third baseman David Wright.

These exclusive deals may or may not help the card companies in regards to their marketing campaigns but in the long run I believe it negatively impacts the collector.  Is it going to reach a point where there are so many exclusive deals that collectors are going to have no choice but to buy multiple brands in order to pull AUTO or GU cards of their favorite players?
