Tony Romo Card in Playoff Contenders

Auto Date Wednesday, December 6th, 2006

Tony Romo has been absent from most 2006 football sets.  The only cards he has had up to this point were in the 2006 Topps Total Set.  In that set he appears on a card with former Dallas QB Drew Henson.

His 2003 Playoff Contenders Autographed Rookie Card has been soaring in recent weeks.

Romo will appear by himself for the first time in 2006 in the Playoff Contenders set that will be issued by Donruss Playoff.

Tony Romo’s Cards and Performance Skyrocketing

Auto Date Friday, November 24th, 2006

Since Tony Romo was named the starting quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys, his cards have been steadily increasing in value.  There are a few reasons that have led to the accelerated price appreciation.

  • Romo was not drafted so he does not have as rookie cards in 2003 sets as high profile quarterbacks such as Carson Palmer and Byron Leftwich.
  • The Dallas Cowboys are one of the most collectible teams and have one of the largest fan bases nationwide.
  • He has performed at a very high level since being named the starter.

A quick review of some of Romo’s rookie cards below shows what the latest price is in the Beckett Football Card Price Guide and what is being realized for cards on Ebay.

Donruss Teams up for Online Trivia Game

Auto Date Thursday, November 23rd, 2006

Donruss has teamed up with Blackdot, a producer of of games, to produce “Two-Minute Drill”.  The game will help support Donruss’ Thanksgiving Day promotion in which they are distributing over 100,000 packs of cards throughout the day in Detroit, Dallas and Kansas City.

Each pack of cards will have information that sends you to the official Donruss website to play the game and learn about collecting trading cards.

The trivia game is based on NFL player stats.  Players start on their own 20-yards line with 2 minutes left in the game.  You need to answer questions to travel the length of the field and score a touchdown.  The faster the questions are answered the faster you move.

As you can see below, the game shows photos of previous Donruss cards with a question relevant to the player chosen.

Cool game.

You can play it at:

2006 Topps Heritage Football Shortprints

Auto Date Wednesday, November 22nd, 2006

There are over 100 shortprints in the recently released Topps Heritage Football.  Even though it has not been officially confirmed by Topps, information from collectors/dealers which are breaking large amounts of product points to the following cards:

95,100,101,107,109,111,121,123,125,127,129,131,133 and 311-407.

There are two different versions of cards 1-90.  There are red back and blue back versions.  Though they are not technically shortprints because the combined print run of the red and blue backs equals cards 91-310 there will be half as many red or blue backs as compared to non-Shortprinted cards.

Controversial Leon Washington Bowman Card

Auto Date Thursday, November 16th, 2006

16.jpgA Bowman “Signs of the Future” autographed card of New York Jets rookie Leon Washington has created quite a stir.  The card shows Washington with his arms folded appearing to make an obscene gesture with both hands. Washington contends that he was making an ‘E’ with both hands to honor his hometown but that some fingers are hidden under his armpits. “All it is is that I’m from the East side of Jacksonville that’s my community,” Washington told The Associated Press.  “It looks funny, but maybe I should’ve taken the picture a different way.  That’s all it really is nothing more than that.”

As what usually happens when a card receives mainstream media coverage, the value has significantly increased in the last few days.  The card which would normally exchange hands on eBay for about $8-12 is currently selling for up to $100.  The price will probably settle down after the hype is over.

Upper Deck’s Debuts First TV Ads

Auto Date Sunday, October 8th, 2006

Upper Deck has unveiled its first series of television ads.  The 15 & 30-second spots will air on Nikelodeon and The Cartoon Network.

In the commercials, five kids are walking across a football field.  The four in front can’t believe it, the kid directly behind them – the one with an ear-to-ear grin – has just traded them the card they wanted for a collection of other cards.  “Can you believe he gave me a Manning autograph for Bush, Leinart and Young?!” says one of the kids in the commercial, holding up his new card featuring the Colts’ All-Pro quarterback.

The protagonist boy with the rookies knows he traded a great card.  But: he got three in return that he can now register online to enter Upper Deck’s “Collect the Rookies, Play with the Rookies” sweepstakes, a contest that sends the winner to the 2007 NFL Players Inc. Rookie Premiere in Los Angeles.  He got more than lucky all of his cards because they can be registered at for a chance to win great prizes.
