From $20 to $200 in 10 Minutes

Auto Date Wednesday, September 20th, 2006

How does a card go up 1000% in 10 minutes?

19.jpgeTopps introducted RRO (Restricted Rookie Offering) cards during the baseball season.  These cards are made available at any given time for a period of anywhere from 10 minutes to 10 hours.  Once that time is up the only way to get your hands on one of them is on the secondary market.

The first football cards introducted by eTopps was an A.J. Hawk card.  It was only available on September 14th from 5:35 PM to 5:45 PM.  After this time elapsed the card was trading for $200 on the eTopps site.  There were a total of 183 cards issued.  Buyers are limited to 5 RRO’s and eTopps will never issue this rookie again as an individual eTopps card.

The highest completed auction ended at $201.54 on September 15th.  As of September 20th, the card was trading at around $155.

“Sleeper” Football Rookies for 2006

Auto Date Thursday, September 14th, 2006

16.jpgEveryone knows about the star football rookies this year: Reggie Bush, Vince Young, Matt Leinart, DeAngelo Williams and others, but there are some other rookies that have already had a positive impact on their team and may soon see an increased demand for their rookie cards.

Jerious Norwood – Drafted in the 3rd round by the Atlanta Falcons, he already is the backup to Warrick Dunn and will see extensive action this year.  In the preseason he led the Falcons and rushed for 215 yards on 30 carries.

Bruce Gradkowski – A 6th round pick of the Tampa Buccaneers, Gradkowski had an impressive preseason.  He completed 74% of his passes for 511 yards.  If Chris Simms continues to struggle like he did in the first game, Gradkowski may see action earlier than expected.

Marques Colston – With the trade of Donte Stallworth to the Eagles, this seventh round pick out of Holstra became a starter opposite Joe Horn for the New Orleans Saints.

Wali Lundy – Lundy was selected by the Houston Texans in the 6th round of the draft.  The injury to Domanick Davis thrust him into the spotlight and he was named the starter before game 1.

“Invincible” card a hot seller.

Auto Date Wednesday, August 30th, 2006

1.jpgThe #1 movie of the past week was Invincible starring Mark Wahlberg.  The movie chronicles the story of Vince Papale.  Papale played for the Philadelphia Bell of the World Football League.  He played two years before the league folded.   He received an invitation to a workout held by then Philadelphia coach Dick Vermeil and ended up making the team.  He played for the Philadelphia from 1976-1978, mostly on special teams.

His rookie card appeared in the 1977 Topps Football set.  The card was listed in the Beckett Football Price Guide as a common in the most recent issue.  The release of the movie has spurred interest in the card and hundreds have been listed on Ebay.  The card is now selling in the $7-20 range.

These types of cards rarely hold their value as the novelty wears off.  Jesse Palmer’s cards were a hot commodity at one time when he appeared on ABC’s The Bachelor, but have cooled off considerably (He was cut recently).

Most Popular Football Card of the Year?

Auto Date Sunday, August 13th, 2006

With the release of Topps Football came the Topps Rookie Premiere autographs. Every year collectors look forward to this hard to pull set of autographed cards from the years top rookies.

This year is no different. The 2006 NFL Rookie Class is one of the most anticipated in recent memory. Reggie Bush, Vince Young, Matt Leinart, A.J. Hawk, DeAngelo Williams, Jay Cutler and others highlight a great offensive class. Even Topps compares this years class to 1983 (Dan Marino, John Elway, Jim Kelly) with the release of the 8306 insert set.

Reggie Bush is the most sought after player in this years sets. The Topps Rookie Premiere Red Ink Autograph which in the past was limited to 10 cards (No word on this years set), has been selling in the $950-$1300 range. There are five completed sales on EBay in this price range.

The black ink version has been selling in the $595-$700 range. A dual Reggie Bush-Matt Leinart red ink version sold for $1300.

The release of SP Authentic autographed patches later in the year may lead to these prices being eclipsed, but will not take away from the popularity of the Topps Rookie Premiere autographs.
