Barry Bonds Renews with Topps

Auto Date Friday, April 13th, 2007

In 2003 Barry Bonds become the only player in history to not sign the standard Players Association licensing agreement that allows the trading card companies to use a player in their different sets.

Bonds later signed an exclusive 2-year contract to appear in Topps trading card products.  That contract expired at the end of last season and until now Bonds has been missing from all 2007 baseball trading card products.

Topps has announced that they have now signed Bonds to a new contract for 2007 and he will appear in future Topps releases such as Topps Baseball Series 2.

Derek Jeter, Mickey Mantle, George Bush?

Auto Date Wednesday, February 28th, 2007

Topps has made quite a stir with the release of 2007 Topps Baseball.

The Derek Jeter base card shows Yankee Great Mickey Mantle and current President George Bush in the background.

Topps Spokesman Clay Luraschi admits that it was done on purpose by the Topps creative department.

The card had been selling for a couple of dollars last week but after appearing in numerous print, online and television publications, the cards sold for upwards of $300 on eBay.   Like always happens with cards that get national attention, the fury is wearing off and the card is now selling below $50.

MVP Signs Exclusive Deal with Topps… Bad for Collectors?

Auto Date Saturday, January 6th, 2007

2006 National League MVP has signed an exclusive marketing deal with Topps.  It will be begin with all 2007 baseball products.

It gives Topps exclusive rights for autographed baseball cards, game-used memorabilia cards and also the use of Howard’s image in advertising and on packaging.

Topps also has an exclusive with New York Mets’ third baseman David Wright.

These exclusive deals may or may not help the card companies in regards to their marketing campaigns but in the long run I believe it negatively impacts the collector.  Is it going to reach a point where there are so many exclusive deals that collectors are going to have no choice but to buy multiple brands in order to pull AUTO or GU cards of their favorite players?
